Kansas City Southern 4149 leads an eastbound freight toward KCS/MILW Joint Agency’s Knoche Yard at Kansas City, Missouri on June 30th, 2022. After spending a couple days railfanning the Kansas City areas, myself and fellow railfan Ryan Scott of SteelRails started our trip back home and decided to railfan our way back which brought us to this scene at Marshall, Missouri on the afternoon of June 30th, 2022.

We came here to try and catch something coming through the flyover here where the UP and KCS cross each other, but never made it to the location because we heard from a fellow railfan, Drew Davison, there was a westbound Kansas City Southern fright headed to Marshall. We decided to wait here to get a shot of it passing the old Chicago and Alton Depot here at Marshall. Now, we didn’t expect a 3-4 hour wait, but that’s what it turned out to be, but the shot was well worth it!

According to the website roadtrippers.com, The Chicago and Alton Depot, also known as the Illinois Central Gulf Depot, is a historic train station located at Marshall, Saline County, Missouri. It was designed by the noted architect Jarvis Hunt and built in 1906 by the Chicago and Alton Railroad. It is a one-story, brick and stone building with Jacobethan Revival and Mission Revival style design elements. The building measures approximately 113 feet 2 inches in length and 42 feet 11 inches wide. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

March 19, 2022 - The crew on eastbound CSX Q374 (Rose Lake, IL (UP) - Avon, IN) freight waits for a signal on the Indianapolis Terminal Subdivision so it can head east from Danville, IN, with Kansas City Southern 4841 and Norfolk Southern 4237 leading the way.

According to worldwiderails.com: Those who are unfamiliar with railroads may not understand why railroads would share locomotives, but there are many good reasons for this long-standing practice. It might seem contradictory for railroads to share locomotives since they’re sometimes in direct competition with each other, but this practice benefits both companies.

Railroads share locomotives in a series of arrangements known as pooled power arrangements. Railroads will share both tracks and locomotives with other railroads to pool resources for increased efficiency.

When a locomotive operates through the territories of multiple railroads without stopping, this locomotive is said to be running on run-through power. In most cases, it is more efficient to leave the locomotive on the track to carry freight for either line than it is to try and pull the locomotive once it hits a territory edge. Trains operate most efficiently when they can remain running.

CSX K442-19 and Q513 pass each other at Nortonville, Kentucky

I love the play of shadows and the lines in this shot of CSX K442-19 and Q513 as they pass each other at Nortonville, Kentucky. CSX K442 was running with a rainbow of power consisting of Canadian Pacific 8519, 9359, Kansas City Southern 4699 and Ferromex 4054 on April 20th, 2021, along the Henderson Subdivision and prompted me to give chase.

K442 was a combined empty ethanol train, heading back north on the CSX Henderson Subdivision with a length of 12,500 feet and with that length, there were only a few places along the line between Nashville, TN, and Evansville, IN where they could meet other trains, and the two-track main between Romney and Oak Hill is one of them.

I had been following the progress of this train for a couple days and thanks to a heads up from fellow railfan Reed Reding about it being north of Nashville and then another railfan, Steve Miller that it was passing through Hopkinsville, Ky I decided it was time to get dressed (about 7:30am) and head south to find this interesting move! About 20 miles later I found it waiting in the siding at Kelly in plenty of time to catch it and then chase it back to Madisonville, catching it a few more times!

BNSF 5202 and KCS 4677 lead CSX K443, a loaded ethanol train, southbound past the north end of Kelly Siding on the Henderson Subdivision at Kelly, Ky on April 22nd, 2021.

I tried catching this train at the south end of Slaughters, Hanson and at Nortonville, but ended up arriving at each of my spots as the train was passing through them! It seemed like every traffic light was red and every car that drove 10mph under the speed limit was between me and my next spot!! It's not everyday we get Kansas City Southern (KCS) leading any kind of train on the CSX Henderson Subdivision, so when I got reports from friends up the line to the north that CSX K443 was southbound with two coming I had to get trackside!

Not sure why it's lights were off as it glided south on track one on January 30th, 2021, because when I caught it with the drone at the south end of Slaughters, Ky the main headlight and one ditch light were working. However here everything was out and the same applied when it hit Crofton and Kelly, Ky, even when it was blowing the crossings. At least the number boards were lit!

I'm guessing something happened as they had to change out an engine once they got to Casky Yard in Hopkinsville, Ky.

It's not everyday we get Kansas City Southern leading any kind of train on the CSX Henderson Subdivision, so when I got reports from friends up the line to the north that CSX K443 was southbound with two coming I had to get trackside!

It was a gray, overcast, drizzling rain kind of day that keeps folks inside normally, but when word got out about it's move then there were railfans waiting its arrival between here where I caught it a the south end of Slaughters, Kentucky, all the way to Nashville, Tennessee and I'm sure points south on January 30th, 2021.

The hardest thing really about shooting pictures in bad weather is really just getting out the door!! I personally keep a couple large golf umbrellas just for this occasion!

However on this occasion I really wanted to put my Air 2 drone up for a shot that would show the tank train disappearing off into the distance and fortunately the rain slacked off enough where I could do so and this is the resulting photograph shot in the 48mp mode on the drone. The weather resulted in a slower shutterspeed that I wanted and I didn't want to boost the ISO so I settled for just a tad of blur on the locomotive, which gives the feeling of the speed of the train!
