March 9, 2014 – 52 Week Challenge – Bokeh

03.09.14 52 Week Challenge-Brokth-Sis and Damion

The challenge this week was to take a photo that illustrates the appearance, or “feel,” of out-of-focus area referred to as Bokeh. It is not how far something is out-of-focus, bokeh is the character of whatever blur is there.

I love the stained glass windows at our church so today after services I posed my sister April and Damion for a portrait using the windows as the background. Lighting was a bit tricky as it was strong coming in through the stained glass, but with shooting on RAW I was able to capture the effect with the background and perhaps one of my favorite photos of my sister (his great-grandmother) and Damion. The laugh came when I squatted down to shoot the picture and at that time I knew I had what I wanted.

Photo was shot with my Nikon D800 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. Exposure was f/1.8 @ 1/320sec at ISO 100. Post processing was done mostly in the Adobe RAW plug-in with a little fine tuning in Topaz.
