April 20, 2020 – CSXT G213 passes CSXT 6025 heading up Geometry Inspection train W001-20 as they inspect track two, just south of Anaconda at Robards, Kentucky on the Henderson Subdivision.
On the rear of the trains is the actual track geometry car (also known as a track recording car) which is an automated track inspection vehicle.
It used to test several geometric parameters of the track without obstructing normal railroad operations. Some of the parameters generally measured include position, curvature, alignment of the track, smoothness, and the cross level of the two rails.
It uses a variety of sensors, measuring systems, and data management systems to create a profile of the track being inspected.

In case you’re wondering about the “Begin OS sign,” from what I find on the web it is an old time term used by telegraph operators and train dispatchers to indicate that a train has passed a particular location on a subdivision. “OS” means “on sheet” referring to the fact that the train dispatcher has recorded train movement on the train sheet he maintained each 24 hour period. It also means Originating Station, the first station on each subdivision from which a train is authorized to occupy the main track.

The crane is an AMERICAN Model 840 Locomotive Crane with a pile driver attached.
The bridge crew is working on installing new pilings for the bridge over Craborchard Creek using the pile driver attached to the crane. I’ll be posting a video on the operation later today if you’re interested in seeing and hearing it work.
Here’s more information on the crane if you’re interested: http://aolcrane.com/pdfs/840850debrochure.pdf

A big shoutout to all the fellow fans that gave me heads up on this move! It was good to be able to keep my social distance by railfanning alone and also nice to get out of the house for the first time in three days, with nice weather finally to boot! Stay safe out there everyone and wash your hands!
March 12, 2020 – I could hear the rumble of CSXT 6354 as struggled as the lone operating engine on its over 6,000 ft manifest train as it made its way up the grade on the main at the middle of the siding at Kelly, Kentucky as it headed north on the Henderson Subdivision.

March 18, 2020 – One of the safe things we can do during this current Coronavirus scare is do some railfanning by ourselves! I had a semi-annual Dr. Checkup today and after the appointment I spent some time railfanning in the rain! Yes, I railfan in all kinds of weather since railroads run in all kinds of weather! All you need is a good golf umbrella along with some timing!
Here I caught CSX W990, a 1,800 ft train loaded with wind turbine generators as it crested the hill at middle Kelly as it made its way north on the Henderson Subdivision at kelly, Ky.
The hardest thing about shooting in bad weather is getting out the door! I keep a good golf umbrella and a large microfiber cloth in my car for just such days!
