Drone Adventures…

Well, I powered the Air 2S up after letting it dry out for three days and it did come on, but the camera and gimbal both are damaged so I’m using the DJI insurance to have it replaced. It’s running me $139, but it’s worth it as I have plans for this on as I also went forward and purchased the Mavic 3 Classic! Stay tuned for more on the Mavic 3 later.

I was trackside setting up for a photo with my drone earlier this week and was flying what I thought was high enough, but I snagged the top power line crossing the tracks!

The drone spun around for about 30 seconds before it finally came loose and it spiraled pretty much all the way to the ground till it reached about 5 feet and then started to automatically land and I couldn’t stop it.

Well as you can tell from this picture it landed softly, but in about 4 feet of water in clear flowing stream! Needless to say, the only way I could get to it is wade out, without my pants, shoes or socks and retrieve it! Man, it was COLD!

I couldn’t believe that the drone was still powered up as it set on the bottom of the creekbed! Once I got it to the bank I powered down, removed the battery and gave it a good shaking, at least the best I could under the conditions.

After getting dressed, also a good thing I was out in the middle of nowhere, I used my jacket to dry it off more. Now, with all this being said, I’m not sure if it will work or not, but I’ve had it drying out since then and don’t plan on powering it up till Thursday.

From what I read online, some drones fair better than others, but I’m encouraged that it was still powered up sitting there in the water. I don’t plan on trusting the battery, so it’s toast, but since the water in the creek was running fast and very clear, so I’m pretty sure no dirt or sediment is on the circuitry.

UPDATE:

As for the Air 2S replacement? Once it arrives I plan on using it to shoot Infrared train shots! I special ordered a custom cut 850nm IR filter from Kolari Vision! No sure just how it’s going to work with a drone just yet, but I’m excited to see what I can get! If nothing else I’ll be able to shoot trains that are stopped and hopefully some pan shots as well. Stay tuned for more on this!

According to their website: Locomotive #108 joined its nearly identical twin, #110, at the beginning of the 2020 season following a four-year restoration. It is a 2-6-6-2T articulated tank engine that was built by the Baldwin Locomotives Works in 1926 for the Potlatch Lumber Company. It later made its way to Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and eventually to the Northwest Railway Museum in Snoqualmie, Washington. The acquisition and subsequent restoration of locomotive #108 completed a more than 20-year goal of increasing passenger capacity which began with the restoration of #110 and the restoration of multiple passenger cars. Both large Mallet locomotives (pronounced “Malley”) can pull a full train of seven authentically restored passenger cars, up from the four cars utilized prior to their addition to the roster. Day 10 of 10 – Photography/Art Challenge

My Railroad Photography as Art

My niece Kelly R Gates has nominated me to share my artwork for 10 days and to nominate another artist to do the same. My take on this challenge is to create what I consider photographic Art pieces from some of my railroad photography.

Now, I realize there are now AI programs out there these days that can create just about any type of art pieces for you with just words, but as most of you know I’m a visual person and all the pieces I post over the next 10 days will be created in Photoshop by me from photographs I have shot, not with AI Software.

I know that this type of art isn’t for everyone, but I do like to get outside the box and my comfort zone from time to time, as I think it’s good for my creative eye. I’d appreciate your constructive thoughts and comments!

For today’s digital photographic art piece, we fine CSXT 845 leading E302 northbound as it exits the bridge over the Ohio River at sunrise, from Henderson, Kentucky, on October 28th, 2022, on the Henderson Subdivision. This train runs between Stilesboro, GA (Plant Bowen) and Sugar Camp Mine on the Evansville Western Railway.

On Day 10 I nominate fellow railfan photographer Dennis A. Livesey to share his art (whatever type he wants to share) ~ I know he has plenty as he hopefully joins in on the 10-day art challenge!!!!

Digital Photo Art - Indiana Southern Railway pulls a Indiana Power and Light load of coal northbound at Oakland City, IN. Another load of black coal crosses over the Norfolk Southern east-west line as Indiana Southern Railroad (ISRR) 3383, 3372, 3371 and 3386 lead their train north on their Petersburg Subdivision at Oakland City, Indiana on a very cold February 13th, 2021. They will continue their move for another 20-30 miles or so through the freezing snow and ice to the Indiana Power and Light power plant at Petersburg, Indiana. As they repeat this run 3-6 times a week from Peabody's Wildboar Mine in Lynnville, IN. According to Wikipedia: The Indiana Southern Railroad (reporting mark ISRR) is a short line or Class III railroad operating in the United States state of Indiana. It began operations in 1992 as a RailTex property, and was acquired by RailAmerica in 2000. RailAmerica was itself acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in December 2012. Indiana Southern Railroad operates 186 miles of track from Indianapolis to Evansville. From Mars Hill (a neighborhood on the southwest side of Indianapolis) southwest through Martinsville and Spencer to Bee Hunter in Greene County, the ISRR runs on tracks that once made up the majority of the former Indianapolis & Vincennes Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. State Route 67 parallels the ISRR along much of this section. From Bee Hunter to Elnora the ISRR has trackage rights over the Indiana Rail Road. My Railroad Photography as Art
 
My niece Kelly R Gates has nominated me to share my artwork for 10 days and to nominate another artist to do the same. My take on this challenge is to create what I consider photographic Art pieces from some of my railroad photography.
 
Now, I realize there are now AI programs out there these days that can create just about any type of art pieces for you with just words, but as most of you know I’m a visual person and all the pieces I post over the next 10 days will be created in Photoshop by me from photographs I have shot, not with AI Software.
 
I know that this type of art isn’t for everyone, but I do like to get outside the box and my comfort zone from time to time, as I think it’s good for my creative eye. I’d appreciate your constructive thoughts and comments!
 
For today’s digital photographic art piece, I’ve selected this shot of another load of black coal crossing over the Norfolk Southern east-west line as Indiana Southern Railroad (ISRR) 3383, 3372, 3371 and 3386 lead their train north on their Petersburg Subdivision at Oakland City, Indiana on a very cold February 13th, 2021.
