Norfolk Southern Savannah and Atlanta Heritage unit 1065 leads NS 167, as it passes Consolidated Grain and Barge Company at Lyles Station, MP 157, as it heads east on the NS Southern West District at Lyles Station, Indiana on December 3rd, 2021. Catching this unit completes my goal of photographing all 20 of the NS Heritage units out in the Wild.
According to the NS Website: Savannah & Atlanta Railway (SR, EMD) began life as the Brinson Railway in 1906, slowly expanding from Savannah toward the Northwest. It was consolidated with other small railroads to become the Savannah & Atlanta in 1917. Central of Georgia bought the S&A in 1951.
According to Wikipedia, Lyles or Lyles Station is an unincorporated community in Patoka Township, Gibson County, Indiana. The community dates from 1849, although its early settlers first arrived in the 1830s, and it was formally named Lyles Station in 1886 to honor Joshua Lyles, a free African American who migrated with his family from Tennessee to Indiana around 1837. Lyles Station is one of Indiana’s early black rural settlements and the only one remaining.
The rural settlement reached its peak in the years between 1880 and 1912, when major structures in the community included the railroad depot, a post office, a lumber mill, two general stores, two churches, and a school. By the turn of the twentieth century,
Lyles Station had fifty-five homes, with a population of more than 800 people. The farming community never fully recovered from the Great Flood of 1913, which destroyed much of the town. Most of its residents left for economic reasons, seeking opportunities for higher paying jobs and additional education in larger cities.
By 1997 approximately fifteen families remained at Lyles Station, nearly all of them descended from the original settlers.

Norfolk Southern railway Savannah & Atlanta 1065 Heritage Unit leads NS 167 as it passes the restored depot at Princeton, Indiana, on its way east along the NS East-West District on December 3rd, 2021. This unit completes my goal of photographing all the 20 NS Heritage units!

According to the Gibson County website: Constructed in 1875 and beautifully restored, the Princeton Depot is the only remaining depot structure in Gibson County. Once housing the C&EI and L&N railways, it was the lifeline of commerce and transportation for the county. Passenger service was discontinued from the depot in late 1960. Today the depot stands as a nostalgic reminder of the importance railroads have played in Gibson County’s history.
The Princeton Train Depot is now home to the Gibson County Visitors Center and features a railway museum with a restored WABASH train caboose.

CSX Q513 climbs the viaduct over the floodplain to cross over the bridge over the Ohio River between Rahm, Indiana and Henderson, Kentucky, as CSXT 3197 leads it south on the Henderson Subdivision in the early morning light of October 13th, 2021.

In this infrared photo we find Evansville Western Railway 4517, 4519 and 6002 as they sit tied down at the entrance of the Mt. Vernon Transfer Terminal, while they wait for their next assignment at Mt. Vernon, Indiana. There wasn’t a coal train in the transloading facility so the only thing I can figure is they were waiting to pick up cars at the Port of Indiana.
According the EVWR website: The Mt. Vernon Transfer Terminal is a coal-loading terminal on the Ohio River at Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Coal is delivered to Mt. Vernon by both rail and truck. The terminal has a capacity of 8 million tons per year with existing ground storage. Mt. Vernon is capable of receiving and unloading 105-car unit trains of coal via EVWR (with direct connections to the majority of Class I railroads) that can transfer to ground storage and/or direct to barge(s).

Indiana Southern Railroad (ISRR) 3371, 3388, 3372 and 3387, lead an empty coal train north at Washington Township, Indiana, as the crew takes the train to Elnora, IN where they tied it down for the Indiana Railroad (INRD) to pick up. The INRD crew will then take the train on their railroad to Bear Run Mine at Dugger, IN for another load of coal for the Petersburg Generating Station at Petersburg, IN.

Norfolk Southern 167 passes through downtown Oakland City, Indiana as it crosses over the Indiana Southern line at the diamond, on its way east along the NS Southern East District with five locomotives and NS 4452 leading the charge on October 9th, 2021!

It’s that time of the year when the fall harvests begin moving south on the CSX Henderson Subdivision as with many other railroads around the country. Here I caught CSX G390, a Grain Express unit train, headed up by CSXT 5213, 3021 and 9010, as they head south up the viaduct to the Ohio River between Rahm, Indiana and Henderson, Kentucky, on October 13th, 2021.
During the rainy season these fields fill up with the overflow from the Ohio River, which is the reason this viaduct was built by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.

Fellow railfans Cooper Smith, Ryan Scott and I spent about 5 hours railfanning southern Indiana on October 9th, 2021, were we caught 5 different railroads operating in the area! We caught RJ Corman, Canadian Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Indiana Southern and Ryan caught BNSF for his sixth railroad after we parted company. A great day of railfanning!
Here we find Norfolk Southern 167 as it begins its slow roll at East Douglas as it departs from Princeton, Indiana on the NS Southern West District, through the partially harvested farm fields.

The second railroad I caught while spending 5 hours railfanning in southern Indiana on October 9th, 2021, was RJ Corman 3478 as it backed a string of autoracks back to the Toyota Plant just before sunrise at Princeton, Indiana.
According to Wikipedia: R.J. Corman Railroad Group, LLC is a privately owned railroad services and short line operating company headquartered in Nicholasville, KY, with field locations in 23 states. It was owned by Richard J. Corman, who established the company in 1973, and ran it until his death on August 23, 2013. The company owns eleven short-line railroads spanning Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.
The company serves all seven Class I railroads, many regional and short line railroads as well as various rail-served industries. These operations encompass an array of services, including railroad construction, short line railroad operations, dispatch, industrial switching services, emergency response, track material logistics, distribution centers, signal design and construction, building eco-friendly locomotives, railroad worker training and an excursion dinner train.

CSX President’s Passenger train P001 heads south up the viaduct approaching the bridge over the Ohio River at Henderson, KY from Rahm, IN, with CSX GEVO units 3310, 3271 leading and CSXT 1 & 2 trailing as they pull 11 cars at a little over 1,000 ft long.
CSX has repainted two of its F40PH locomotives, to be used on its business train, into predecessor Baltimore & Ohio’s blue, gray, and black paint scheme. CSX1 is former 9998 (former Amtrak 288) and from what I can find out CSXT 2 is the former F40PH 9993 (former Amtrak 395). The other F40s are expected to be painted in the same scheme in the coming months as they are cycled through the shops.

A loaded Norfolk Southern Duke Energy coal train pulls west from the Charger mine at the HBD-DED Ayrshire just outside Winslow, Indiana as NS 224, a daily Louisville to St. Louis train, waits on the NS Southern East-West District main for it to clear Hatfield Junction on May 1st, 2021.
The lash-up on 224 is Norfolk Southern NS 4096 GE AC44C6M DC to AC Rebuilt (C40-9), NS 1844 EMD SD70ACU DC to AC Rebuilt (SD70), and NS 1068 EMD SD70ACe Erie Heritage Unit and runs daily from Louisville to St. Louis.

On May 1st, 2021 I chased the BUGX 1752 between Tell City and Troy, Indiana for my first time on the Ohio River Scenic Railway with good friend Ryan Scott! This nose shot photograph was shot as Infrared and really like the way it turned out!
Last fall I started dabbling into the realm of Infrared (IR) photography, specifically to apply it to railroad photography, but with the onset of winter I put it on the back burner as IR just doesnt work as well without the greenery, at least for what I want.
I even started a group here on Facebook for Infrared Train Photography if any of my subscribers are interested in the technique!
