01.23.14 iPhone Challenge-Bye

January 23, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Bye!

01.23.14 iPhone Challenge-Bye

My nephew Damion looked up from playing with his trains long enough to wave good-bye while wearing his favorite bear hat. It’s not a terribly sharp photo as the light was very low in the room, but sometimes that doesn’t matter. Catching him in this moment, with the hat, expression and wave makes up for the softness of the photo. Anyone who photographs young kids knows that they run at about 100 miles an hour and sometimes you just can’t get them to stand or sit still long enough to get a sharp photo.

Does this mean that you should do away with your soft photos? Not if they record a moment that brings you emotion and that you’ll be able to look back on and fondly remember.

Today I used the built in camera app to shoot the photo and then processed it through Snapseed. I then brought it into Photoshop CS6 and brought down the saturation in the photo and applied the clarity filter in Topaz Adjust.

01.22.14 iPhone Challenge-Pick Me Up

January 22, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Pick me up!

01.22.14 iPhone Challenge-Pick Me Up

Today when I stopped by my sisters house my niece Elaina opened up her arms wide and gave me this expression you see here. Of course I along with anyone else could tell what she wanted me to do and she sat there patiently waiting as I shot her picture using the Lomora Pro App before picking her up. She, along with all the young kids in the family, are very social and like having their picture taken which works well for me and most of the rest of the family as we’re all into the picture taking thing!

This was the first picture that I’ve taken that I’m pretty happy with from this new App that I downloaded yesterday and I must say I’m still figuring out the settings that I like. It was shot with the Provia Film with normal exposure in a square format. I kinda like the retro blue look of the photo, like I shot tungsten film in the daylight. The App only has one style border which is Ok, but I wanted to have that Polaroid look that I used yesterday and so I opened the image and processed it through the ShakeItPhoto App to achieve that look. I also did a little tweaking in the Snapseed App to bring down the blue tint just a little as it was more than I liked with the Lomora Pro camera App.

I like the ability that the iPhone gives me for processing the same picture through several different Apps to achieve a look that I like. Just can’t wait till March as I will be able to upgrade to the 5S, which has 12mp camera instead of the 8mp with the 4S.

01.21.14 iPhone Challenge-Rail Plated

January 21, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Railroad plates

01.21.14 iPhone Challenge-Rail Plated

CSX railroad recently did some rail/tie plate replacements through downtown Madisonville, Ky and left a heap of these plates that were replaced. I liked the mountain of the old rusty plates and together with the old building next to the tracks in the background and the cloudy skies I envisioned a pop art kinda picture when I first saw the scene.

After shooting the picture with the native iPhone 4s camera I opened the picture in a App called Lomora, one I haven’t used a lot. The “Lomo” style seemed to be what I thought I was looking for so I downloaded this app to try it out. There’s also a pro version of the App which I didn’t use for this photo, but think I’ll make the leap and pay the $2.99! I love my apps and their prices! I’ll try the pro version out with my pictures from the next few days, so stay tuned.

01.20.14 iPhone Challenge-CFL Light

January 20, 2014 iPhone Challenge – CFL Light

01.20.14 iPhone Challenge-CFL Light

Today’s photo is a simple shot of a CLF lightbulb. This is the first one I’ve ever used in my home as the early ones always had that bluish white light that gave the look of florescent which I really never cared for. The new ones of today are a warmer tone and look more like incandescent lights which I favor. After installing it I looked at it and decided it’d make a good shot for my daily iPhone challenge.

I used the standard camera app on my iPhone 4s to shoot the photo with. I touched the screen where the light was to set the exposure for the camera (yes you can do that and it also sets the focus point) as I wanted the tube to show up and everything else to go black.

I then opened the image in the ShakeitPhoto App that gives an old style Polaroid SX-70 look to the picture, complete with the borders. That resulting picture I then opened in the Dynamic Light App to make the bulb pop even more as it didn’t quite have the look I wanted.

01.19.14 iPhone Challenge-Elaina Art

January 19, 2014 iPhone Challenge – The Yawn

01.19.14 iPhone Challenge-Elaina Art

Today’s photo is of my niece Elaina in mid yawn and as you can tell, it’s not my normal looking photograph and yes, it’s had a bit of post processing done to it.

I’ve always felt that I am a frustrated artist in respects that I’ve always wanted to be able to paint, either watercolor or oils, and even took a few classes, but never developed the enthusiasm that I have for my photography.

Well, here lately I’ve been playing around with different ideas using filters and plugins to allow a photograph to take on the look of the types of “art” that I like and today’s is one such photograph.

I did the initial shooting with the Hipstamatic App again with the Jane Lens and the DC film today as we were eating lunch. She was rather bored sitting in her car seat while my sis and I were finishing up our lunch and kept yawning off and on. Well, at six months old I couldn’t get her to yawn on cue so between my sister and I keeping an eye out and me keeping the iPhone ready to snap at a moments notice I was able to catch this one yawn.

I then brought the image into Photoshop as I’ve downloaded a trial of a filter set I’m thinking about buying that is called Snap Art by Alien Skin software, which gives you total control over how you can turn your photograph into “art” by using presets and sliders that produce the effect. I’m really happy with the results and think I might lay out the $99 to purchase the filter set.

January 18, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Shovel

01.18.14 iPhone Challenge-Shovel

I have to admit I like photos of old, beat-up and rusty machine parts. Especially when they kind of remind me of a robot or some futuristic machine like this one does. It even seems to have a face of sorts to me.

When out looking for something to photograph don’t limit yourself to your own comfort zone. Look for things that you’d not normally photograph or think of as beautiful. You may surprise yourself with what you end up capturing.

I used the Hipstamatic App with DC Film and the Jane Lens to capture the original photo. I then did some post processing work on it by opening the jpg in Adobe RAW and processing the image. After that I opened it in Photoshop CS6 and did some final processing with the Topaz Adjust filter.

01.17.14 iPhone Challenge-Old Bus

January 17, 2014 iPhone Challenge – The Bus

01.17.14 iPhone Challenge-Old Bus

How many people can say they have a bus in their backyard?

I don’t know the answer to the above question myself, but I know at least one and they live just south of Crofton, Ky.

I’m always on the lookout for interesting old machines to photograph as part of an ongoing series I’m doing on the subject. Someday I hope to turn my favorite photos into a book on the ones I’ve found fro0m my travels over the years.

I think having a long-term photography project goes a long way in improving ones photography skills and if you’re not currently doing one, I’d encourage you to take one up.

Our photography club is currently running 4 different year-long photography challenges that could easily be a long-term project that anyone that wants to be a better photographer could use to improve their skills and challenge themselves.

It’s not to late to join us and you don’t have to be a paid member of the club as you can participate via our Facebook page. Stop by and pay a visit. I’m the President of the club.

01.16.14 iPhone Challenge-Red Wall

January 16, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Red Wall

01.16.14 iPhone Challenge-Red Wall

I have been eying and thinking about this picture for several weeks now and the elements came together today when I stopped by for dinner tonight.

One of my favorite BBQ places, Brother’s BBQ in Madisonville, Ky recently renovated and they have panted the walls this bright read and accented the dinning area with these booths along the way with chrome and black tables along the wall that are setup for people with laptops. You can’t see it, but there’s an AC outlet behind the condiments, which until this visit was quite visible and not really to my liking for a picture.

Tonight when I arrived I noticed that they had condiments setup in front of the outlet making this picture a nice graphic design that I captured.

I shot it with the HDRpro App and processed it through the Snapseed App for the finishing touches.

Oh yes, the BBQ was great, as always!

01.15.14 iPhone Challenge-Susi

January 15, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Sushi

01.15.14 iPhone Challenge-Susi

These two guys were working the Sushi counter at the Ft. Campbell PX when I stopped in to do some grocery shopping. I liked the screen that was around the concession, but it wasn’t quite what I had in mind and so I decided to play around with some of the settings in the Snapseed App to see if I couldn’t find something that was closer to what I had in my minds eye.

After processing the image as I normally do by adjusting the Ambiance and Shadows slider under Tune Image and applying the Drama filter, I played around with the Grunge filter until I achieved the the effect you see here that is more in line of what I wanted. I reminds me of rice paintings I have seen on my many trips to the orient over the years.

01.14.14 iPhone Challenge-Colors-Web

January 14, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Color my world

01.14.14 iPhone Challenge-Colors-Web

I think I have passed this building everyday for many years and until today I never really noticed the bold graphic design that the siding made and the clouds in the sky helped to balance the top off the building for a nice photograph.

Contrasting from yesterday’s black and white photo, this one screamed color at me when I first drove past it. Of course I came back. Bold and bright colors can help make a impact in your photography so always be on the lookout for places where you can use them.

Photo was shot using the HDRpro App and then processed in Snapseed for the final image.

01.13.14 iPhone Challenge-Damion and Davie-Web

January 13, 2014 iPhone Challenge – The visit

01.13.14 iPhone Challenge-Damion and Davie-Web

Today I caught my nephew Damion just visiting with his uncle Davie. Not sure just who enjoyed the visit more, me, Damion or Davie. I decided that I wanted to do this photo in black and white so the color didn’t distract from Damion squatting down on the floor. We all live in a color world, but sometimes a photograph works much better in black and white.

There’s many black and white apps available for the iPhone that actually shoot your photo in black and white and while I have several of them I shot this photo originally in color with the phones native camera. After looking at the color version I decided to process it as black and white.

Most of the post processing was done in Snapseed, but I did bring it into Photoshop and do a little tweaking in the highlights and shadows.

January 12, 2014 – 52 Week Challenge – Cars and Bikes

11.06.14 Weekly Challenge-Patterns 1

This weeks challenge theme was patterns. The object is to shoot all week long and then post your favorite photo at the end of the week.

For me this week the favorite is a hard one to choose so I’m posting two! Both were shot in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday, the first day of the polar vortex that brought all the cold weather to our region. It was 7 degrees when I ventured away from the warmth of my SUV to take both these photos, and that’s not counting the wind chill factor.

The big stack of cars came from a salvage yard and I just love the patterns and colors that are represented here in this photograph. I’ll wager that if you were to figure the cost of each of these cars at their new price, there’s a lot of money crammed into this pattern photo.

Exposure info: Nikon D800, 1/4000 @ f/5.6, ISO 500 with a Nikon 70-300mm lens at 300mm.

The second photo of the bikes is pretty much right downtown. Didn’t know the city was doing bike rentals like this, but it’s a great idea and provided me a great source of a pattern picture. Even the sidewalk has a pattern! Another shot that I love.

Exposure info: Nikon D800, 1/60 @ f/18, ISO 720 with a Sigma 24-70mm lens at 24mm.

01.12.14 iPhone Challenge-Church Doors

January 12, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Open Doors

01.12.14 iPhone Challenge-Church Doors

Today’s iPhone Challenge picture was shot at First Christian Church here in Madisonville, Ky where I have been a member since I was about 2 or 3 years old. I go here every week to “Recharge my batteries for the week ahead.”

My photography has always spilled over into all aspects of my life… church and my faith are just two of them. I video the service as many of you know each week and anyone who has followed my photography know that a lot of my photos have come from my life here in this house.

I thank God for the creative talents he as given me and I only pray that I have and will continue to do these talents justice.

I’ve had people, that haven’t found their faith, ask me over the years how I can believe in something or someone that I can’t even see or photograph? It’s not any different than the wind… you can see the effects of it all around you, but you can’t actually see the wind itself. For me God is the same way. I may not be able to see or capture a image of him on my camera, but I continue to capture his presence in the many people I encounter along my photographic journey.

Peace to everyone on this day and I pray that you have a place to recharge your batteries!

01.11.14 iPhone Challenge-Bedroom Window

January 11, 2014 iPhone Challenge – The window view

01.11.14 iPhone Challenge-Bedroom Window

Today’s iPhone Challenge photo is the view from the chair I spent most of my afternoon in as I worked on installing and setting up a new computer for my sister. The one she’s been using for several years was one that I built and it started to develop issues that were going to not really be economical to continue upgrading.

I got so wrapped up in the process that I almost forgot about shooting my daily challenge photo and decided to look around the room to find something that made an interesting photo for me and this is what I came up with.

It was shot using the HDRpro Application on the iPhone and then I processed it using Snapseed and applied the HDR Scape filter to it before adding the border.

01.10.14 iPhone Challenge-Lone Survivor

January 10, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Lone Survivor

01.10.14 iPhone Challenge-Lone Survivor

I took a photo of the poster advertising the movie “Lone Survivor” which I went to see with my sister and niece in Evansville, Indiana as my iPhone Challenge photo for the day.

It’s the first movie I have gone to see in a very long time where the audience actually applauded at the end, not because of the makers of the film, or even the acting in the film, but because of the story these creative movie makers brought to life.

As a photographer most things that I am engaged in and usually talk about the visuals that I find in my life and the lives of those around me. As a 24-year veteran, this movie really moved me and not wanting to give anything away by bringing up spoilers to the film all I can say is, if you haven’t seen it… you need to!

01.09.14 iPhone Challenge-Xavier with iPhone

January 9, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Photography and kids

01.09.14 iPhone Challenge-Xavier with iPhone

Today’s iPhone challenge photo is of my great-great nephew Xaiver using his grandmother’s (AKA GiGi’s) iPhone and he’s just a little over two years old!

As many of you know I’ve been working on all the new kids in our family to develop an early affection for the love of taking pictures. Where it will lead only time will tell. I do know that none of them at this stage of the game mind having their pictures taken and as they get older I can only imagine that taking their own pictures, weather professionally or just for fun will be as normal for them as walking. (I hope)

It seems a long time ago, (the early 1990s) when I was in the Air Force and our unit (Combat Camera), where I used my first digital camera (DCS-100) that was a Nikon F3 body that was modified by Kodak to shoot using one of the first sensors (1.3 Megapixels). We were one of the first test sites and the Air Force has been at the forefront of using digital photography ever since then.

It amazes me on how far we’ve come from that first camera. It had this thick cord coming out of the bottom of the camera leading downward to a box that had a preview screen and a whooping 20 megabyte hard drive for storing the photos at a 1.3 megapixels each. As I recall the price of the cameras were somewhere in the range of $20,000.

Now days you can buy a toy camera (that actually takes photos) for $50 that is higher quality than that and has the ability to store hundreds if not thousands of pictures. I can only imagine where the cameras will be, or what they’ll be (like Google Glass, a wearable set of glasses that record photos or video and more) by the time these kids are even in high school. I think there’s exciting times ahead!

Anyway, I’ve gotten away from today’s photo so let’s get back to it.Xaiver was working with the phone as he was getting ready to leave with his mom and was in the hall leading to the front door. I knew that the lighting was going to be very poor as there’s no overhead light there. So when he sat down in a small kids chair and brought the iPhone close to his face, I knew I could capture what I was looking for without using the dreaded flash. I just waited for the light from the phone to illuminate his face, which is what I wanted to emphasize, and then fired off several frames till I got a few that seemed to be fairly sharp and exposed good for his face.

I find that the iPhone does alright in low light situations as long as you keep in mind that it increases the ISO of the camera which also increases noise in the picture. Sometimes this is good and sometimes it’s distracting.

The other thing to keep in mind that in low light without using the flash the camera will use a slow shutter speed so try to keep the camera and the subject steady as possible when making your photo.

Today I processed the photo with a new App I downloaded called Afterlight. I saw some photos done with it by someone else and decided I’d give it a try. It has a lot of nice features. The border was applied using Snapseed.

01.08.14 iPhone Challenge-Leaf frozen in ice

January 8, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Frozen Leaf

01.08.14 iPhone Challenge-Leaf frozen in ice

Sometimes when I head out to search for a scene that inspires me enough to take a picture, I have no idea where I’ll end up or what I’ll be shooting. However, today I knew I wanted some sort of picture that shows the frozen water that has taken over most of the lakes and ponds since the Arctic Vortex pushed all the cold air through-out the region. So, I decided to head to Earlington’s Loch Mary Lake to see what I could find there.

I walked along the shoreline looking for something that said “photograph me” and I found this one area that had shrubs and other things when I spied this little leaf sticking half in and half out of the ice and I knew I had what I was looking for. I ended up taking the case off my phone, turning it upside down and putting the phone right on the ice so I could get a real low angle with the bring clouds in the background to illuminate the leaf.

Post processing was done all in the phone, using an Apps called Dynamic Light and the border was added using Snapseed.

01.07.14 iPhone Challenge-Sebree Power-Web

January 7, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Leading lines

01.07.14 iPhone Challenge-Sebree Power-Web

One of the basic rules of composition is leading lines and it’s one of my favorites. Add a set of wobbly railroad tracks and anyone that knows me knows I’m in heaven. The only thing that could be better would be a train coming toward me in the photo, but the steam billowing out of the power plant at Sebree, Kentucky helped to make this picture for me.

I always like the look of this plant and on my way back from Richmond, Ky today I decided to jump off the parkway to see if I couldn’t get a good shot of the steam. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your viewpoint, I couldn’t find a spot I liked closer to the plant. So I pretty much gave up the idea of getting a shot and headed on over to US 41 to head on toward the barn and perhaps a different photo for my iPhone challenge.

As we crossed over the CSX railroad crossing leading up to the plant I glanced down and saw this photo. I didn’t get much more than a quarter of a mile up the road when I turned around and went back to shoot this photo.

Shot with my iPhone 4S using the HDRpro App and processed using the Snapseed App.

01.06.14 iPhone Challenge-Nashville Artic Weather.-Web

January 6, 2014 iPhone Challenge – Shooting in the Arctic

01.06.14 iPhone Challenge-Nashville Artic Weather.-Web

Well, that’s what if felt like today anyway, the arctic that is. I hope today’s picture gives that feeling perhaps.

I went to Nashville today to pick up my niece Chrystal who was returning from a Christmas visit to her son, Brad and his family, in Colorado.

This being the first day of the Arctic Vortex that has brought extreme cold further south than it has in a very long time I decided to head to Music City early so I would have some time to shoot some “Urban Landscapes” for a “film” challenge I’m doing this year also. (Those challenge pictures will be posted the end of end of each month.)

I’ve been to Nashville a lot over the years, but today my sister, April, and I wandered around areas that I’ve not been to before as I was looking for things that said “Urban Landscape” to me. That’s also where this photo creation came from.

It’s a scene along the river just down from the Titan’s Stadium and with the temperature being 7 degrees at that time, not counting the chill factor, I really didn’t spend a lot of time shooting this scene on my iPhone as I couldn’t wear my gloves and operated the touch screen very well. It’s on a dock that runs along the river under a walk bridge and the wind was whipping off the water pretty good so I shot about two frames of this scene.

I kinda had the idea of processing the image the same way as yesterday’s image and was really interested in how the sun and clouds were going to turn out. I’m pretty happy with the end results.

I used the native camera, an App called Painteresque and another called Snapseed, all to produce what you see here.

01.01.13 Out of the Camera-Elaina

January 5, 2014 – 52 Week Challenge – Straight out of the Camera

01.01.13 Out of the Camera-Elaina
January 1, 2014 – 52 Week Photo Challenge – This first weeks challenge theme was “Straight out of the Camera” – It’s said that what you do on the first day of the year is a good indication of what you’ll be doing the rest of the year, so I had to start it off shooting pictures of one of my great-greats. This is Elaina who is always gracious to allow me to take her picture, hope it stays that way as she gets older. The challenge this week was to shoot the picture and post it, not to do any “tweaking” in Photoshop or any other program. The only thing I’ve done is to re-size the full image for the web and add my watermark.Shot as a RAW file with my Nikon D800 at 1/60 @ f/8 at ISO 4,000 with a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens.
Approaching Storm

January 5, 2014 – A little Magic Scrooberizing

Approaching Storm

Approaching Storm

This year’s iPhone photography challenge is as much about venturing out from my normal photography to see what I can produce creatively with the iPhone and the many Apps that I use. Tonight’s picture was done with a couple different Apps, or actually three. The native camera, an App called Painteresque and another called Snapseed, all to produce what you see here tonight. The title above pertains to one of the processes the Painteresque App goes through.

First, I’ll be honest and say I totally forgot about shooting my iPhone photo for the day until I looked up from my computer and noticed that it was almost dark outside! For me, the dark and the iPhone are not two things I like to put together as I hate to use flash and with the iPhone the darker it gets the more noise you get in the photo unless you use flash.

The wind and snow had started to fall and so I thought perhaps a shot of the trees in my yard against the last light of the day might provide for an interesting photo. So I shot a series of the tops of the trees that I liked and made my way back into the house to thaw out.

I liked the way the trees looked, but I wanted a more blurry, movement type effect and so I thought I’d see what I could do with the App called Painteresque and after trying several different style effects I finally settled on the one called Painteresque 1. It was close to what I was thinking in my minds eye, but not quite. I saved the photo with the effect applied, opened that one back in the App and then applied it a to the image I had saved to get this final photo that I’m happy with.

The only thing I did in Snapseed is apply the border. The watermark was applied in Photoshop where I cropped it to the right size to post to the web.
I’m really pleased how this one turned out and I’m excited to try some of the other effects as the year goes on and also some of the other many Apps that I’ve not really played with that much that I’ve bought.
