Norfolk Southern 8092, 3619 and 3613 lead a loaded coal train as they pull under Indiana 64 as they head for the Duke Energy power Gibson plant, just outside of East Mount Carmel, Indiana on April 8th, 2023.
According to Wikipedia: The Gibson Generating Station was originally built as a two-unit coal-fired power plant in 1972 by Public Service Indiana (PSI) with initial plans to build 8 units. The 1970s saw the addition of Units 3, 4. However, environmental regulations prevented the construction of the two remaining additional units in the original plan. In 1982, Unit 5 was constructed, and two more stacks were added. In the 1990s, number 4 was separated from number 3’s stack, and each was given its own stack, while Units 1 and 2 continued to share a stack.

Newly painted and refurbished RJ Corman units 2645 and 2648, along with GMTX 9059, sit at Nugent Sand Yard in Louisville, Ky on Saturday afternoon, April 15th, 2023. These first two units were recently acquired by the company from Norfolk Southern and are SD70M locomotives, which are beginning to see road service after coming out of the shops.

Locomotive #109 Alco RS-3 built in 1950, 78426, 1800 (1200) hp, 1370 produced. It was bought new by Kennecott in November of 1950 for EX-Ray Mines but was never delivered to them. It was sent to Kennecott Copper Corp and was later sold to LA Department of Water and Power and now is in service at the Nevada Northern.

The conductor on CSXT G412, 50th Anniversary of Operation Lifesaver locomotive 4568, does a roll by inspection of loaded coal train, C904 as it pulls into the north end of the siding at Kelly, Kentucky on May 10th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision.
CSX C904 pulled all the way into the siding to allow the southbound local, L391, to pull in behind him so G412 could continue its move north.

CSX I025 heads south at Kelly, Kentucky, where it meets M648 in the siding with the third unit being newly rebuilt Metra 506, dead in tow on the Henderson Subdivision, waiting to move on north to Chicago, Illinois, on May 25th, 2023.
According to The Diesel Shop website this unit is a SD70MAC that was rebuilt by Progress Rail. It is one of 14 units being rebuilt by Progress with AC traction, geared for 80 mph, HEP, microprocessor-control braking and Tier 3 emissions.

CSX 3314 leads I025 south after recently exiting Baker Tunnel at Ridgetop, Tennessee on May 6th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision. Nevada Northern Railway engine 93 sits quietly chuffing away, as beams of sunlight stream through the engine house windows as a crewmember works on the engine, after another day of work at Ely, Nevada on February 11th, 2022.
Locomotive #93 is a 2-8-0 that was built by the American Locomotive Company in January of 1909 at a cost of $17,610. It was the last steam locomotive to retire from original revenue service on the Nevada Northern Railway in 1961 and was restored to service in 1993.

The late evening light rakes across the landscape as RJ Corman 2649 and 2645 pull Z543 out of Nugent Sand Company in Louisville, Ky, as they head toward downtown with a load of sand bound for Nugent Sand at RJ Corman’s Rupp Yard in Lexington, Ky, for a variety of central Kentucky customers.
The Nugent Sand Co. at Louisville takes a million tons of sand out of the Ohio River each year. Some 400,000 to 600,000 tons of that has been moved by R.J. Corman into the Lexington and surrounding markets each year since the two companies partnered in 2005.

According to a CSX press release: CSX unveiled a new OLI rail safety commemorative locomotive in September of 2022, and it was painted at the railroads locomotive shop in Huntington, West Virginia. The CSXT 4568 engine will travel the company’s rail network as a visual reminder for the public to be safe at highway-rail grade crossings and near railroad tracks.

RJ Corman 5361 leads Z545, a train loaded with aluminum ingots towards Louisville, Ky on the CSX LCL Subdivision on May 18th, 2023. This train is also referred to as the ALCAN train and it runs daily between Louisville and Berea, Ky, to and from the Novelis Recycling center at Berea. Alcan used to own the Company and the name most folks use for this train is still “Alcan” even though Novelis bought them out.
The Berea plant is one of the world’s largest plants dedicated to aluminum can recycling, and they process approximately 20 percent of the United States’ used aluminum cans, by melting them down and producing sheet ingots, according to the Novelis website.

CSXT 7026 leads CSX M352, a loaded autorack train as they street run through downtown LaGrange, Kentucky, headed north on the LCL Subdivision on May 17th, 2023.
According to the Train Aficionado website: CSX runs through La Grange on what is known as the LCL Subdivision. This 101-mile line connects Covington, Kentucky, to Louisville, Kentucky. The railroad tracks run right through the heart of the town literally. The railroad tracks are embedded on the eastbound side of the roadway for the whole stretch of downtown. The trains pass the city business district which includes quaint shops and restaurants.
On average these days about 10 trains pass through here daily.
According to Hidden History of La Grange, Ky by author and local historian Nancy Stearns, LaGrange is known for its trains. It became an important junction for the railroad, with lines going to Frankfort and Cincinnati, and this made the town an important stop for travelers and businesses. The interurban electric rail car made round trips from LaGrange to Louisville daily until automobiles surpassed the interurban in popularity.
