CSX W995 high and wide move northbound through downtown Madisonville, Ky

CSXT 5499 leads W995 through the crossing on West Center Street in downtown Madisonville, Kentucky as it heads north on the Henderson Subdivision with a General Electric high and wide load on September 13th, 2021.

These trains can take a long time to get from point A to Z as they are restricted normally to 25mph as their max speed when loaded and 5-10mph through turnouts. There is a GE crew on the caboose and their job is to watch and if needed shift the load to either side by a distance of 12 inches to allow clearance for passing trains or other obstacles.

Always an easy and interesting train to chase in my book! I had planned to chase it to Henderson, KY, but the crew ran out of their day and had to tie the train down at Hanson, but I still got a video and a couple of good shots between Nortonville and Hanson! It was a good day trackside!

PAL Scotty’s Rock train departs Madisonville, KY

The Paducah and Louisville (PAL) 2101 and 2104 lead an empty rock train as they depart from the Scotty’s Rock Yard complex at Madisonville, Kentucky, and head north to Litchfield, KY, for another load, on September 15th, 2021.

CSX W995 High and Wide at Mortons Gap, KY

It was a slow and steady move at 25mph as CSXT 5499 led W995 as it made its way through Mortons Gap, KY, on its way north on the Henderson Subdivision with a General Electric high and wide load.

Rail Action on the CSX HD and PAL Railroads

Railroad action on the CSX Henderson Subdivision and the Paducah and Louisville Railway on September 7th, 2021 from the air around Western Kentucky.

Paducah and Louisville LGE coal train at Madisonville, KY

The Paducah and Louisville (PAL) LGE coal train, with UK 4522 locomotive leading, pulls off the Warrior Coal Mine lead onto the PAL main as they approach West Yard at Madisonville, Ky. From here they begin their run to the Louisville Gas and Electric power plant in the Kosmosdale neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky.

CSX W995 NB high and wide GE move at Nortonville, KY

Today was a day of choices!! I had planned on chasing the Paducah and Louisville LGE coal train that had the UK 4522 locomotive leading as it went north from the mine to Louisville, but as I was waiting for it to depart with fellow railfan Barry Delaney I got word about a high and wide move on the CSX Henderson Subdivision! For me it was an easy choice really as the LGE train runs a lot, but we only get high and wide moves with a caboose once in a while!

Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 at Brewerville, Illinois

The conductor and others on the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 crew keeps an eye on the tracks ahead as they round the curve after crossing the Kaskaskia River bridge on the UP Chester Subdivision at Brewerville, Illinois, as they make the way to St. Louis, MO, the last stop on this leg of their journey.

Hot off the drone we find Paducah and Louisville Railway 2013, in its University of Louisville paint, passing under the highway 70 west overpass as it leads PRX1, a loaded coal train, south through Richland, Kentucky, less than 30 minutes ago on September 11th, 2021.

Southbound CSX at Corning, Arkansas

A southbound CSX led mixed freight holds at the signals in downtown Corning, Arkansas on Friday, August 27th, 2021, on the UP Hoxie subdivision, as they wait for the arrival of steam locomotive, UP 4014, the big boy in this infrared shot.

Union Pacific 4014 northbound at Jacksonville, AR

Union Pacific 4014, the Big Boy, heads north on UPs Hoxie Subdivision at Jacksonville, Arkansas as part of its 2021-month long tour around the United States on August 27th, 2021!

Here engineer Ed Dickens keeps an eye on the tracks ahead as it approaches the N JP Wright Loop Road crossing, perhaps scanning for the legendary the Loop Road Monster (Bigfoot) which has been sighted in this rural area in the past, but there wasnt any sight of him during the big boys run through the area! I guess bigfoot doesnt like steam trains nearly as much as the throngs of railfans that chased it!

CSX X605-04 heads north at Cedar Hill, TN

CSX X605-04 heads north as it passes a tied down X801 sitting in the siding at Cedar Hill, Tennessee. Both trains have been rerouted via the Henderson Subdivision due to flooding from the recent hurricanes.

The lead engine on X605, which is the top train, is a Dash 9 in YN2 paint, led by CSXT 9012 which is a reactivated unit that has been in storage. The parked X801 had UP 8211 leading and another UP trailing.

CSX X605-04 heads north across Gum Lick Trestle

CSX X605-04 heads north across the Gum Lick Trestle, just south of Crofton, Kentucky with 9012 leading the way. It is a Waycross, GA – Rose Lake, IL train that has been rerouted via the Henderson Subdivision due to flooding from the recent hurricanes. The lead engine is a Dash 9 in YN2 paint, led by CSXT 9012 which is a reactivated unit that has been in storage.

Union Pacific 4014 northbound at Newport, AR

Union Pacific steam locomotive 4014, the Big Boy, with its entire train in view, passes the Farmers Elevator complex as it heads north on the UP Hoxie Subdivision at Newport, Arkansas on August 27th, 2021. Here it is on the leg of its trip from Little Rock, AR to Poplar Bluff, MO during its month-long tour around the Union Pacific line.

The Big Boy is an articulated 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive which was manufactured by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York in 1941. There were a total 25 of these giants built and of the eight remaining locomotives this is the only operational one.

CSX J732 southbound from Mortons Gap, KY

Well, one week ago today I lost my DJI Air 2 to a fly away that landed in the top of a 30 tall oak tree while chasing UPs Big Boy and today’s photo is from my new drone, the DJI Air 2S!

It’s my first train photo from the drone and while cosmetically it looks like the same drone, it’s a big improvement! I’m loving that it has a 1″ sensor, where as the Air 2 only had a ½ inch one. It gives me 20 megapixels over the 12 that the Air 2 had. Of course, there’s many other improvements between the two drones and there’s many videos on YouTube that talk about them if you’re interested.

In case some of you are wondering, I decided not to use the Fly Away insurance that came with the care package that I had on the drone, as I wanted to go ahead and get the newer drone and the only thing you can get with the care package is a replacement, not an upgrade.

This shot is of was taken just south of Mortons Gap, Kentucky on the Henderson Subdivision as two SD 40-3s and a SD40-2 leads the daily CSX J732 local south on a beautiful summer day, after performing its interchange duty at Atkinson Yard in Madisonville, KY and was headed back to Casky Yard in Hopkinsville, KY on September 1st, 2021.

Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy on the move!

UP 4014 northbound at Brewerville, Illinois

The crowd was huge at Chester, Illinois and just didn’t want to let the Big Boy leave which delayed its departing from there. This made me and a lot of other railfans stand around at a grade crossing waiting for this shot for over an hour and a half in the 100-degree weather, but it was worth it for my last shot of Union Pacific 4014 on its 2021 tour!

I ended up cropping this shot much tighter than I actually shot it thanks to two guys in cowboy hats that walked down next to the tracks in everyone’s shot, but that stuff happens and after working with this shot, I like how this in-your-face photograph turned out! Sometimes when you’re doing a chase that is a popular as this in the hobby, you just must adjust accordingly as everyone wants their shot, even the cowboys!

This is one of the last images from my DJI Air 2 drone before it ended up in the top of a 30’ oak tree the next day at Dexter, MO after a Fly Away.

It was a bit of a wait in a hot and humid sun, but it was well worth the wait for my first Infrared photograph of the Union Pacific Big Boy, which is an articulated 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive that was manufactured by the American Locomotive Company. There were a total 25 of these giants built and of the eight remaining locomotives this is the only operational one. Here it makes its way north across the Big Muddy River in Aldridge, Illinois on August 28, 2021, as it heads to its next scheduled stop at Chester, Illinois.
