According to a CSX press release: CSX unveiled a new OLI rail safety commemorative locomotive in September of 2022, and it was painted at the railroads locomotive shop in Huntington, West Virginia. The CSXT 4568 engine will travel the company’s rail network as a visual reminder for the public to be safe at highway-rail grade crossings and near railroad tracks.

Paducah and Louisville Railway (PAL) locomotive 4120, ex UP 4120, pulls the daily local back south toward Princeton, Ky as it pulls through Richland, Ky, on January 31st, 2024. The unit is one of several Union Pacific engines that PAL recently acquired and unit they get their time in the paint shop, sport the PAL logo on the nose and side. With the paint over the UP herald, it looks like the engines have a mustache to me.

Paducah and Louisville Railway crews conduct a train swap at Caneyville, Ky

Paducah and Louisville (PAL) crews on the Louisville Gas and Electric Paducah and Louisville (PAL) empty and loaded coal trains meet at Caneyville, Kentucky, and exchange trains on February 1st, 2024. The Louisville crew will take the loaded train back to their home territory north on the PAL to deliver their load to Louisville Gas and Electric power plant, outside of Louisville, Ky. The Madisonville crew will take the empty train back south for another load of coal from Warrior Coal Mine.

The 270-mile (430 km) line was purchased from Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in August 1986. The 223-mile (359 km) main route runs between Paducah and Louisville with branch lines from Paducah to Kevil and Mayfield, Kentucky, and another from Cecilia to Elizabethtown, Kentucky. The PAL interchanges with Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) and Canadian National (CN), formerly Illinois Central Railroad, in Paducah. In Madisonville, the line interchanges with CSX Transportation (CSXT).

CSX hot intermodal I026 passes under the Paducah and Louisville Railway at Madisonville, Ky

CSX hot intermodal I026 passes under the Paducah and Louisville Railway (PAL) on the Henderson Subdivision as it heads north at the location called Monarch in Madisonville, Ky on January 29th, 2024.

I’ve been trying for a long time to catch an over/under shot at this location and today I thought I had it, but the PAL train was a bit short today and the CSX train got at this spot about 2 minutes after he had passed. It’ll happen someday!!

CSX local L391 pulls out of the south end of Atkinson Yard in Madisonville, Ky on a wet, foggy afternoon on January 23rd, 2024 as it heads back to Casky Yard at Hopkinsville, Ky on the Henderson Subdivision.

During our run to Seattle, Washington my sister and I traveled along the Columbia River Gorge…

During our run to Seattle, Washington my sister and I traveled along the Columbia River Gorge on our recent trip and the only Union Pacific Equipment I caught on this day was this Maintenance of Way Equipment at The Dalles in Oregon. It was busy picking up ties on the Portland Subdivision, down from The Dalles Dam, on June 20th, 2023, with UP 958200 leading.

At the far end of the equipment, you can see where they are picking up ties along the right-of-way and I’ll be posting another shot showing that end tomorrow morning. An unusual and cool looking piece of equipment for sure!

From what I can find online Union Pacific took delivery of the RELCO built MOW work train set #958200 in July 2019. The set is made up of special flats/gons and a rebuilt SD-40-2 locomotive (former number unknown). The trailing unit was numbered UP 958201.

J. Neils Lumber Company Shay number 5 pulls out of the station at the Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) with a caboose train on September 16th, 2023, during the museum’s 70th anniversary celebration weekend at Union, Illinois.

According to the IRM Website: J. Neils Lumber Company 5 is the museum’s only geared locomotive. It is a Shay, designed with three cylinders mounted vertically on the engineer’s side that power a drive shaft running the length of the engine alongside the wheels. This allows all wheels to be powered using bevel gears. Shays were extremely slow but were powerful and could negotiate uneven track and sharp curves, making them popular with logging and mining companies.
