The conductor on G419, with the latest CSX Heritage Unit L&N 1850 leading his loaded grain train, conducts a roll-by inspection on hot intermodal I028 at the south end of the siding at Slaughters, Kentucky on October 5th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision.

According to CSXT: CSX has introduced the sixth locomotive in its heritage series, a freshly painted unit honoring the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Designated CSX 1850, the locomotive will be placed into service, carrying the L&N colors across the 20,000-mile CSX network.

The paint scheme was designed and applied at the CSX Locomotive Shop in Waycross, Georgia, which has produced all six units in the heritage series celebrating the lines that came together to form the modern CSX. Like the other heritage locomotives, the L&N unit combines the heritage railroad’s iconic logo and colors on the rear two-thirds of the engine with today’s CSX colors and markings on the cab end.

Chartered by the State of Kentucky in 1850, the L&N grew into a vital transportation link between the Gulf Coast and the nation’s heartland. The railroad was absorbed by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, which subsequently became part of the Chessie System and, ultimately, today’s CSX.

The CSX heritage series is reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable, and sustainable rail-based transportation services.

Episode 41 Edited Saturday Video by Jim Pearson Photography

This week we see trains between Abee, IN and Amqui, TN! We catch the Evansville Western Local returning to Mt. Vernon, IN after working at CSX Howell Yard in Evansville, IN. Then we head south catching rail train W016 at Mortons Gap, Ky, again at Hanson, Ky where they met M513, then I018 at Trenton, Ky, M648 at Ridgetop, TN and lastly I025 at Amqui, TN! Enjoy and please Like! Share and Subscribe! Thanks for watching!

When you look at this photo there’s a few interesting and new things about it! First notice the engine number is CSXT 512 and it’s leading M512-12 as it heads north at Mortons Gap, Ky on October 12th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision! Now, what’s the odds you’d have all the 12s?

The other new thing is the camera I used to shoot this picture. I’ve upgraded my Nikon D800 to the Nikon D810! There’s not a big difference between the two cameras, but the D800 had some issues and was starting to show its age. I bought it new back in 2012 when they first came out and have made 240,000 exposures on it since then, so I think I got my money’s worth out of it! I really loved the camera, and it served me well, but it was time for an upgrade. I did purchase the D810 used, but it’s in like new condition and only has just over 6,000 exposures on it. It’s a much faster camera, but the sensor and everything is pretty much the same as the D800 so there is no real learning curve here.

I’m leaving tomorrow for a weeklong trip on two steam photo charters, the first at the Durango & Silverton in Colorado and the second at Chama, NM and this new D810 will be put to work capturing steam!! If you happen to be attending either of these charters, look me up! I’d love to meet you in person!

CSX Chesapeake & Ohio Heritage unit 1869 leads CSX M500 as it passes through the Ohio Street Crossing, on the way north at Evansville, Indiana on September 28th, 2023, on the Evansville Terminal Subdivision.

According to the CSX Website: A locomotive commemorating the proud history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway has entered service as the fifth in the CSX heritage series celebrating the lines that came together to form the modern railroad.

Numbered CSX 1869 in honor of the year the C&O was formed in Virginia from several smaller railroads, the newest heritage locomotive sports a custom paint design that includes today’s CSX colors on the front of the engine and transitions to a paint scheme inspired by 1960s era C&O locomotives on the rear two-thirds.

The C&O Railway was a major line among North American freight and passenger railroads for nearly a century before becoming part of the Chessie System in 1972 and eventually merging into the modern CSX. In 1970, the C&O included more than 5,000 route miles of track stretching from Newport News, Virginia, to Chicago and the Great Lakes.

Designed and painted at CSX’s locomotive shop in Waycross, Georgia, the C&O unit will join four other commemorative units in revenue service on CSX’s 20,000-mile rail network.

The heritage series is reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable, and sustainable rail-based transportation services.

Colorful light from signals along with the smoke from Steam locomotive Frisco 1630 help provide a dramatic night photo as it sits in the station at the Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) during their 70th anniversary weekend in Union, Illinois, waiting to depart on the evening of September 16th, 2023.

According to IRM website: St. Louis – San Francisco Railroad (“Frisco”) 1630 is the museum’s most famous steam engine. A “Russian Decapod,” it was built in 1918 for export to Russia but was embargoed when the Bolshevik Revolution took place. Instead, the newly completed engine was sold to the Frisco, which used it in both freight and passenger service into the 1950s. The Frisco later sold it to Eagle-Picher Mining, where it saw use hauling freight and aggregate trains until the mid-1960s. It arrived at the IRM in 1967.

The late evening light and rainy weather helped bring about this slow shutter speed shot of the conductor on G419, with the latest CSX Heritage Unit, L&N 1850 leading his loaded grain train, doing a roll-by inspection on empty coal train E904 at the south end of the siding at Slaughters, Kentucky on October 5th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision, trackage that used to belong to the L&N.

I’ve been trying for several days to get a good shot of this engine, as it’s been at Howell Yard in Evansville, IN for their Family Days event. I didn’t want a shot of it just sitting in a yard, so I played the long game and made two-day long trips to Indiana to get it finally on the move! I started the chase on this move at Princeton, IN this was my last shot of the day! It rained pretty much the whole day, but fortunately there was a lull here and a couple of other spots where I was able to get the drone up!

The CSX heritage series is reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable and sustainable rail-based transportation services.

CSX Chesapeake & Ohio Heritage unit 1869 leads CSX M500 as it passes the old depot (once housing the C&EI and L&N railways) in downtown Princeton, Indiana on September 28th, 2023, as it heads north on the CE&D Subdivision.

Indiana Railroad 65 Interurban Car sits at the west end of the station platform, ahead of Illinois Terminal interurban coach 101 and Frisco 1530 steam locomotive as it waits to depart the depot at the Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) on the wet and rainy evening of September 16th, 2023, during the IRM 70th Anniversary at Union, Illinois.

According to the IRM website: Indiana Railroad 65 was the first piece of equipment IRM ever acquired, becoming the museum’s “mother car” when the museum purchased it for preservation in 1953. When it was new in 1931 it was among the most modern interurban cars in the world, a lightweight coach designed for high-speed operation across the Indiana Railroad interurban network. Car 65 was one of the last interurban cars in use when IRR closed out operations in 1941. Museum volunteers have completely restored car 65 to its appearance while in service in Indiana in the 1930s.

Digital Art Photo - September 16th, 2023 - J. Neils Lumber Company Shay #5 sits at the depot at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois at night, waiting to make another night run, during the museum’s 70th Anniversary Celebration.

According to their website, J. Neils Lumber Company 5 is the museum’s only geared locomotive and was built in 1929 by the Lima Locomotive Works. It is designed with three cylinders mounted vertically on the engineer’s side that powers a drive shaft running the length of the engine alongside the wheels. This allows all wheels to be powered using bevel gears. Shays were extremely slow but were powerful and could negotiate uneven track and sharp curves, making them popular with logging and mining companies.
