On June 28th, 2023, I tried to count the locomotives stored on the Black Hills Subdivision at the BNSF Donkey Creek Yard at Rozet, Wyoming in the two lines of locomotives from this picture, but there’s too many and seem to go on forever. The trains on the far left are coal trains, loaded and empty, waiting on crews.
According to news reports I found online, this yard was scheduled to close June 5th, 2022, affecting 38 jobs, but from what I could see there were people working in the yard, so Im not sure if that happened or not. The reported layoff was due to the tough market for coal. It has been a bit over a year and perhaps things have changed since then.

Here we get a bird’s eye view of CSX Heritage series locomotive 1973, the Chessie System unit, as it pulls its empty coal train through the loop at Warrior Coal Loop, outside of Nebo, Kentucky on August 13th, 2023, as it prepares to load CSX R592.

CSXT 3026 leads S980-07, a high/wide move of sheet metal, south on the CSX Henderson Subdivision on August 8th, 2023, as it passes through downtown Crofton, Kentucky. There was a total of 99 bulkhead flat cars on the train, each loaded with 8-10 pieces of steel metal plates. I’m told they are bound for Panama City, Florida where the metal will be fabricated into industrial pipe at the Borusan Berg Pipe plant located there.

CSX M512 takes the cutoff at Mortons Junction on August 14th, 2023, as it heads north on the Henderson Subdivision with two high/wide transformers as part of their cargo, at Mortons Gap, Kentucky. The track they’re taking cuts off the downtown areas of Earlington and Madisonville, Ky and frees up the main for the dispatcher to run opposing trains.

On August 12th, 2023, Conductor Nick Jochim climbs aboard CSX Heritage series locomotive 1973, the Chessie System unit, after throwing several switches to align his empty coal train E002, into the south end of Atkison Yard at Madisonville, Ky on the Henderson Subdivision.

CSXT 3194, Honoring Our Law Enforcement locomotive, leads southbound loaded coal train C307 as it heads up the viaduct at Rahm, Indiana on the CSX Henderson Subdivision, where it crosses the Ohio River into Kentucky. It’s carrying coal loads from White Oak Mine in Dahlgren, Illinois to Plant Bowen in Stilesboro, Georgia.
From the Web: The current viaduct and bridge were built by the L&N railroad and were dedicated on the last day of 1932 at a cost of about $4 million. It replaced one erected in 1885, also built by the L&N, which at that time was the longest channel span of that type in the world at 2.3 miles long.

Canadian Pacific 8953 and 8831 lead empty potash train B244, as they pass the pond around the location known as poorhouse on the railroad, as it heads north on the Henderson Subdivision at Madisonville, Ky at sunset on August 15th, 2023.
This location is right around MP 279 on the Henderson Subdivision and got its name from the Louisville and Nashville Railway days when the Hopkins County Poorhouse stood near this location.
According to the Kentucky Historic Institutions website: In 1910 there were more than 84 thousand paupers that were enumerated in poorhouses in the United States; this was a marked increase of 3 percent compared to 1904. In Kentucky, the number of enumerated people in poorhouses in 1910 were 1,522; 871 being male and 651 being female. Of that population, 1,044 were native born, 167 were foreign born, 27 have unknown nativity, and 284 were colored, Irish and Swiss immigrants had a much high ratio of pauperism in 1910 than any other nationality.
According to the occupations of individuals admitted into poorhouses, unskilled laborers made up the highest number. Skilled trades also held a relatively considerable number as well. Women frequently were domestic servants prior to admission. A relatively large number of about two filths reported being unable to do any work of any kind. A statistically significant number of paupers during the year 1910 were consider physically or mentally defective though the number of insane and feeble-minded almshouses was on the decline in 1910. Three fourths of discharges were done so as self-supporting. Approximately 17,000 paupers died in poorhouses during 1910 a rate of 207.7 paupers per 1,000. The most common cause of death at that time was tuberculosis of the lungs.
In earlier days, poorhouses were sometimes used as temporary shelters for vagrants as well as a place of detention for petty criminals. This was often due to poorhouses being the only public agency available to offer relief, even to those who were insane, feeble-minded, or epileptic. Some communities combined poorhouses with free hospitals or infirmaries that catered to the poor.
