CN FUPD local heads south on the CN Bluford Subdivision, West Paducah, Ky

The Canadian National Fulton to Paducah (FUPD) local, led by CN 5485 and 8887, pulls off the Maxon Branch at the CN/PAL diamond in West Paducah, KY as it heads south on the CN Bluford Subdivision on its way back to Fulton, Ky after interchanging with the Paducah and Louisville Railway.

I really love shooting with my long lens, but it’s something you really have to learn to use, to be affective! Very hot days can be very difficult due to heat distortion causing heat waves through out your photo. Sometime the effect can be good, others not. I’m surprised this one came out as well as it did as the temperature was just over 90.

The other thing is how the longer lens can really compress and distort the look of the tracks, which is what it has done here in this shot. This was shot at 850mm with my Sigma 150-600 with a 1.4 teleconverter.

Tech Info: Nikon D800, RAW, Sigma 150-600 w/1.4 teleconverter @ 850mm, f/9, 1/2000, ISO 1100.

CN FUPD local heads into the PAL yard at Paducah, Ky

The daily Canadian National Fulton to Paducah (FUPD) local, led by CN 8887 and 5485 rounds the curve leading into the north end of the Paducah and Louisville Railway yard at Paducah, KY under stormy skies on June 29th, 2021, to do its interchange work.

Many people put their cameras away when the clouds roll in and skies get dark, but for me that’s just when things get interesting! I love how they add drama to the scene and don’t forget, trains operate 24/7 in all kinds of weather! Just because it isn’t sunny and the lights not on the right side of the train, doesn’t mean there isn’t great photos to be had! Personally, I keep a large golf umbrella in the back of my SUV just for bad weather days! Get out there!!

CSX K442-19 and Q513 pass each other at Nortonville, Kentucky

I love the play of shadows and the lines in this shot of CSX K442-19 and Q513 as they pass each other at Nortonville, Kentucky. CSX K442 was running with a rainbow of power consisting of Canadian Pacific 8519, 9359, Kansas City Southern 4699 and Ferromex 4054 on April 20th, 2021, along the Henderson Subdivision and prompted me to give chase.

K442 was a combined empty ethanol train, heading back north on the CSX Henderson Subdivision with a length of 12,500 feet and with that length, there were only a few places along the line between Nashville, TN, and Evansville, IN where they could meet other trains, and the two-track main between Romney and Oak Hill is one of them.

I had been following the progress of this train for a couple days and thanks to a heads up from fellow railfan Reed Reding about it being north of Nashville and then another railfan, Steve Miller that it was passing through Hopkinsville, Ky I decided it was time to get dressed (about 7:30am) and head south to find this interesting move! About 20 miles later I found it waiting in the siding at Kelly in plenty of time to catch it and then chase it back to Madisonville, catching it a few more times!

Canadian National U72481-05 heads southbound over the Ohio River bridge between Metropolis, IL and West Paducah, KY carrying a load of Iron ore from Keenan, MN to Convent, LA on the CN Bluford Subdivision.

According to Wikipedia: The Mesabi Iron Range is a mining district in northeastern Minnesota following an elongate trend containing large deposits of iron ore. It is the largest of four major iron ranges in the region collectively known as the Iron Range of Minnesota. First described in 1866, it is the chief iron ore mining district in the United States. The district is located largely in Itasca and Saint Louis counties. It has been extensively worked since 1892 and has seen a transition from high-grade direct shipping ores through gravity concentrates to the current industry exclusively producing iron ore (taconite) pellets.

There are three iron ranges in northern Minnesota, the Cuyuna, the Vermilion, and the Mesabi. Most of the world's iron ore, including that contained in northern Minnesota, was formed during the middle Precambrian period.

CN 2852 leads Northbound W986 at Robards, Ky with Windmill Train

We get trains on the CSX Henderson Subdivision from time to time that haul windmill motors and housings, but this is the first I can recall being led by a Canadian National and Union Pacific locomotive!
It was early morning on May 4th, 2021 when I first heard that this train was finally making its way up the Henderson Subdivision from Nashville, Tennessee. I found this out after I had already committed to going to Evansville, Indiana to chase CSX W992-28, the high and wide move that was tied down at Harwood Siding in Evansville.
Well, after getting there and sitting waiting for a crew (it had been there more than 12hrs) I decided if I wanted a chance to catch a shot and video of W986 that I needed to head back south.
Of course, I did catch the high and wide move the next day and if you haven’t already you can see a shot of it on any of my sites and a video will be coming soon, but back to W986.
I had planned to catch this train at Rahm where it comes across the Ohio river into Evansville, but with the weather and darkening skies I decided not to chance missing it where I could get a shot with my drone, so I made my way to the north end of Anaconda at Robards, Ky on the Henderson Subdivision and caught it heading south there with CN 2852 leading.
As you can tell from the photo the light was fading fast and the train was moving fast! I didn’t have time to do much more than get the drone up and in position before the train hit this spot. If I had gotten there a bit earlier, I probably would have boosted my ISO a little, to up the shutter speed, but actually I think I like the little bit of motion blur on the lead unit as it gives a feeling of speed! Details below on the Tech stuff!

A rainbow of power waits at Kelly, Ky for a loaded coal to pass

March 25th, 2021 – Railfan action showing, CSX, CN, BNSF, NS and UP Action on the CSX Henderson Subdivision between Romney at Nortonville, KY and Slaughters, KY.One train of note was the northbound CN empty ethanol train with Canadian National 3246, 2235, 2518, 2605 and 2293 as power.

Canadian National and BNSF on the CSX Henderson Subdivision

The CSX Henderson Subdivision usually sees foreign power on a regular basis these days and March 25th, 2021 was defiantly a busy one, with a lot of interesting moves for me to chase and photograph!

Here we have loaded southbound ethanol train K423 (Bensenville, IL to Tampa, FL), with BNSF 9100 and 4418 leading, on its way south as it meets an empty ethanol train K644 (Chicago, IL – Jacksonville, FL) with Canadian National 3246, 2235, 2518, 2605 and 2293 at Slaughters, Kentucky, as it waits in the siding to continue its move on north on the Henderson subdivision.

Unit trains of one type or another are some of my favorite trains to photograph and video and when you throw into the mix foreign power on top of that and it makes me want to chase all day long!! I just love the uniformity of the cars, like snakes winding their way along the landscape.
