The late evening light and rainy weather helped bring about this slow shutter speed shot of the conductor on G419, with the latest CSX Heritage Unit, L&N 1850 leading his loaded grain train, doing a roll-by inspection on empty coal train E904 at the south end of the siding at Slaughters, Kentucky on October 5th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision, trackage that used to belong to the L&N.
Ive been trying for several days to get a good shot of this engine, as its been at Howell Yard in Evansville, IN for their Family Days event. I didnt want a shot of it just sitting in a yard, so I played the long game and made two-day long trips to Indiana to get it finally on the move! I started the chase on this move at Princeton, IN this was my last shot of the day! It rained pretty much the whole day, but fortunately there was a lull here and a couple of other spots where I was able to get the drone up!
According to CSXT: CSX has introduced the sixth locomotive in its heritage series, a freshly painted unit honoring the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Designated CSX 1850, the locomotive will be placed into service, carrying the L&N colors across the 20,000-mile CSX network.
The paint scheme was designed and applied at the CSX Locomotive Shop in Waycross, Georgia, which has produced all six units in the heritage series celebrating the lines that came together to form the modern CSX. Like the other heritage locomotives, the L&N unit combines the heritage railroads iconic logo and colors on the rear two-thirds of the engine with todays CSX colors and markings on the cab end.
Chartered by the State of Kentucky in 1850, the L&N grew into a vital transportation link between the Gulf Coast and the nations heartland. The railroad was absorbed by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, which subsequently became part of the Chessie System and, ultimately, todays CSX.
The CSX heritage series is reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nations economy with safe, reliable and sustainable rail-based transportation services.

CSX Heritage series locomotive 1973, the Chessie System unit, pulls a empty coal train at Trident in Madisonville, Kentucky onto the Morganfield Branch as they head for the Warrior Coal Loop, outside of Nebo, Kentucky on August 13th, 2023, where it will load their train CSX R592.
According to Wikipedia: The three railroads that would make up the Chessie System had been closely related since the 1960s. C&O had acquired controlling interest in B&O in 1962, and the two had jointly controlled WM since 1967.
Chessie System, Inc. was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Western Maryland Railway (WM), and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad (B&OCT). Trains operated under the Chessie name from 1973 to 1987.
On November 1, 1980, Chessie System merged with Seaboard Coast Line Industries to form CSX Corporation. Initially, the three Chessie System railroads continued to operate separately, even after Seaboard’s six Family Lines System railroads were merged into the Seaboard System Railroad on December 29, 1982. That began to change in 1983, when the WM was merged into the B&O. The Chessie image continued to be applied to new and re-painted equipment until July 1, 1986, when CSXT introduced its own paint scheme. In April 1987, the B&O was merged into the C&O. BNSF 1093 and 1005, in H1 paint scheme, lead loaded potash train CSX B207 as they pass the old L&N Depot at Henderson, Kentucky on their way north on the CSX Henderson Subdivision on September 9th, 2023.
I am told that Railmark Holdings, Inc has purchased the depot and is currently continuing restoration on the station. I have not been able to find out what their plans for the depot include yet.

CSX M500 heads north at Slaughters, Kentucky, on the Henderson Subdivision, with 7 locomotives on the head end of their train on August 15th, 2023. Not all units were under power, and they were CSXT 983, 832, 237, 5472, 5418, CEFX 1055 and CSXT 5279. This is the power on the train that I featured in my Saturday Edited Video clip where the clip of this train cost me $500!
I had the tripod setup to record the trains passing through the north end of Slaughters as I captured this shot from my drone. After shooting this shot, I flew back to where I was at to land and while landing a gust of wind that blew through a string of empty lumber spine cars blew the tripod over and broke the screen big time on my iPhone 14 Pro, as I was tending to the landing of the drone. I should have let the drone hover till the train passed, but I wanted to get to another spot to catch it again and stepped about 6-8 feet away from the tripod, too far to catch it before it hit the ground.
The screen repair for the iPhone 14Pro was $450 plus tax and labor! Was I upset? Of course, but it’s the hazards of the game and so live and learn! Check out Episode 36 of my Saturday edited video if you’d like to watch the fall! Next time the drone hovers!

CSX M512 meets CSX B795 at the north end of the siding at Crofton, Ky on August 14th, 2023, as it heads north on the Henderson Subdivision with two high/wide transformers as part of their cargo. Here it passes the ethanol train as the conductor and his trainee do a roll by inspection as M512 rolls by with a 10mph speed restriction.

CSXT 4565 leads an empty coal train E904 as it heads north trough Mortons Gap, Kentucky on August 14th, 2023, along the Henderson Subdivision. E904 runs between Pennroyal, SC and Evansville, IN where it’s handed off to the Evansville Western Railway for loading at Sugar Camp Mine in Illinois.

The conductor and his trainee keep a watchful eye as they do a roll-by inspection of CSX southbound M513 as they pass their rail train (W016) in the siding at Hanson, Kentucky on August 25th, 2023, on the Henderson Subdivision.
M513 had ex-CP Rail 3018 dead in tow as its trailing unit with painted new reporting marks of SBZX, which is SB Railcar Inc. based out of New Hampshire and is a leasing company.
Also sitting on the ground is a new switch that will be installed in the siding at Hanson as some point in the future.
